Distributed Control in Optical Wdm Networks

چکیده
This paper describes and evaluates distributed wavelength reservation protocols for all{optical WDM networks. These protocols are essential for applying WDM techniques to large scale all{optical networks. The protocols ensure that the wavelengths on the links along a path are reserved before communication takes place. A message is transmitted using the reserved wavelengths and remains in the optical domain untill it reaches the destination. Based upon the timing at which the reservation is performed, the protocols are classiied into two categories: forward reservation protocols and backward reservation protocols. Although forward reservation protocols are simpler, our performance study shows that backward reservation protocols provide better performance.

Efficient Distributed Control Protocols for WDM All-Optical Networks
Path Multiplexing (PM) and Link Multiplexing (LM) [3, 5] are two approaches for establishing connections (or lightpaths) in optical networks. This paper describes distributed control protocols for establishing lightpaths in WDM networks using LM and PM. We propose and evaluate the performance of two classes of protocols, namely Source Initiated Reservation (SIR) and Destination Initiated Reserv...

Today, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems are deployed extensively in transport networks. They are used mainly for static point-to-point connections. With the availability of fast reconfigurable Optical Cross Connects (OXC) and the introduction of a control plane in the Optical Transport Network (OTN), optical channel based logical networks can be built for dynamic WDM ...
متن کاملDynamic Lightpath Establishment in Wavelength-Routed WDM Networks
In wavelength-routed WDM networks, a control mechanism is required to set up and take down all-optical connections. Upon the arrival of a connection request, this mechanism must be able to select a route, assign a wavelength to the connection, and configure the appropriate optical switches in the network. The mechanism must also be able to provide updates to reflect which wavelengths are curren...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of distributed wavelength assignment in WDM optical networks
In WDM wavelength routed networks, prior to a data transfer, a call setup procedure is required to reserve a wavelength path between the source-destination node pairs. A distributed approach to a connection setup can achieve a very high speed, while improving the reliability and reducing the implementation cost of the networks. However, along with many advantages, several major challenges have ...
متن کاملA real-time distributed scheduling algorithm for supporting QoS over WDM networks
Most existing or proposed WDM networks employ circuit switching, typically with one session having exclusive use of one entire wavelength. Consequently they are not suitable for data applications involving bursty traac patterns. The MIT AON Consortium 1 has developed an all-optical LAN/MAN testbed which provides time-slotted WDM service and employs fast-tunable transceivers in each optical term...
